O'Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. Her family was from Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High School in 1981. Before shifting to Los Angeles, she appeared in several commercials. Her first job was an Montgomery Ward model, where she also appeared in a variety of commercials. She was the star of her debut on the big screen in the romantic comedy of 1988 She's Having a Baby, and later was cast in recurring character on ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Other guest appearances include TV shows, independent movies, and several other roles. Donna Abandando was her first big role on ABC's police drama NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the large-haired squad secretary between 1993 and 1996. Each year she was awarded an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in Drama Series. Along with her ensemble, she received the Screen Actors Guild Award, for the Best Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
